The Himeji Castle, situated in Himeji, Japan, is one of the oldest and most complete castles, standing as a strong example of traditional samurai-era design. Known as the “White Heron Castle”, it has never been destroyed by war or natural disasters, making it a rare historical site that still holds its original structure. Visitors can tour the interior by climbing up the main keep for panoramic views. Given the castle’s vast size, planning ahead is essential to making the most of your visit. General Information for Himeji Castle

The Himeji Castle is open everyday from 9:00am – 5:00pm (until 6:00pm from June to August), except for December 29 and 30. Admission ends one hour before closing. To enter the museum, you can purchase a ticket at the Ticket Office on the day of your visit or online on the official ticket website.

What to expect at the Himeji Castle

Entering

After your tickets are scanned, you’ll follow a 15-minute uphill pathway to reach the entrance of Himeji Castle. Upon arrival, you’ll be provided with plastic bags to cover your shoes before entering. Wooden benches are available nearby, offering a place to sit while you remove your shoes.

Himeji Castle rises six stories high, offering the chance to climb steep wooden staircases and explore each floor. The first level is dimly lit, with only a few lanterns casting light in the corners—it’s best to avoid using your phone’s flashlight to preserve the atmosphere for others.

As you ascend, each floor features informational panels that explain its historical function, whether for storing weapons or concealing samurai.

Upon reaching the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the city and surrounding landscape through the castle’s windows.

As you make your way back down, be sure to follow the directional signs to avoid bumping into visitors still climbing up. Before exiting the castle, take a moment to visit the final room, where you’ll find a 1:20 scale model of the timber frame structure of Himeji Castle’s main keep.

This model served as a guide for craftsmen during the major renovation between 1956 and 1964, when the entire keep was dismantled, restored, and carefully reassembled.
